We were tasked with re-desinging and updating the iconic Tūī trophy for the 2024 Aotearoa Music Awards. It was an honour to have been entrusted with this task and to add to the story of this taonga (treasure) that is gifted to Aotearoa’s exceptional musicians.

The trophies are made entirely of native tōtara, the most chiefly of trees which can be viewed as representing everything that roots us, anchors us, identifies us and locates us in te ao Māori. The transition to wood also makes these the most environmentally sustainable trophies in the awards’ history.

Steeped in symbolism, the new bases echo the form of the end of a waka hoe - the paddle used to propel canoes (a metaphor for our music sector) through the waters of celebration, community and musical excellence. The form of the Tūī bird perches atop the hoe, singing the waiata (songs) of artists from Aotearoa.
